Harry Stone Recreation Center

Project Description

This expansion and renovation has transformed a 1957 Old East Dallas landmark into a modern center serving a multi- generational community. A wing of light with colorful glazed facades now addresses the neighborhood in a welcoming, exciting way. In the new state-of-the-art fitness center, vibrant views highlight the connection to the outdoors. A wide light-filled interior thoroughfare connects the updated control office to the multi-purpose rooms, commercial kitchen, a laptop bar, and the refurbished dance studio, as well as the original two indoor gyms.

The project encompasses a 4,400 S.F. expansion and 4,400 S.F. renovation. As the main gateway and junction for local sports in the park, the front plaza serves as a public living room for crossing paths and sculptural bike racks. The building was sited to preserve and exhibit the beautiful existing live oak trees, which provide ample shade and filtered light.

Dallas Park & Rec saw the opportunity to develop a sustainable environment and energy efficient building. The design team responded with a day-lit, wireless environment that supports energy conservation through high-efficiency HVAC, lighting controls and monitoring systems.
