Medrano Middle School is a 169,167 s.f., 3-story facility which houses 1,200 students from grades 6 to 8, with future expansion planned for up to a total of 1,600 students. The facility includes 47 classrooms, inclusive of 9 laboratory classrooms, and gymnasium. Athletic fields include hardtop basketball and volleyball courts, a baseball field, softball diamond, and a field that serves as a dual purpose for soccer and football.
With the awareness of the extensive sustainable measures employed throughout the facility, originating from both the DISD Technical Design Guidelines and from the A/E Team’s high performance best practices, the District sought to ascertain the feasibility of pursuing LEED Certification, even though construction documents had long been completed and the project was midway through construction. Once it was recognized how much energy savings were anticipated to be realized on the facility in comparison to standard DISD facilities, GSRA and its team were directed to pursue LEED for Schools Certification. Although DISD had initial consultation with a third-party LEED review team to kick off the certification process, GSR Andrade Architects performed as the primary LEED project administrator in the process and the facility received LEED Certification.
